Baja 2007

[Baja Cow and Calve]
What Baja Report would be complete without a Cow picture. There seemed to be an excess of very young calves this year apparently at the age where they run & play more like puppies than cows.

[Baja Beach Fly Fishing], Dad hooked-up
Dad sticking it out in the turbulent surf and foot-crushing rolling rocks hooked up with another Lady Fish at the beach we dubbed “The Dinner Beach” from a previous outing

[Baja Baby Rattlesnake]
Anyone that’s ever ridden with any of us three while driving a snaky looking road on a warm morning or evening knows first hand that we are usually driving well below the speed limit while our eyes carefully scan the road and we stop frequently to inspect sticks, cracks, pieces of tire retread, and anything at all remotely resembling a snake. Baja always perplexes us at how few of snakes are actually found. In fact, last year was the first time we’d seen one down there, and it had been ran over. Well, when I slammed on the brakes and began backing up on the way home one night through a mountainous, snaky looking road both my Dad and Brandon’s heads cocked forward wondering what I’d seen that they’d missed. I wasn’t certain, but something in the opposite lane had caught my attention. It was small, about the size of a popsicle stick, but one end was elevated. After passing it in reverse and deciding that we’d backed up to far we began moving forward again and there it was. I was the first out of the car and had a headlamp lighting it up, I told Brandon it looked like a small corn snake or rat snake and after a short pause he said “wait! is that a baby rattlesnake”? Yep, sure enough it was, he hadn’t developed his rattle yet so it wasn’t obvious in the low light. We took some pictures and let the little guy slither off the road. I’m sure glad I didn’t pick it up. The picture turned out great though!

[Baja Beach Boat Launch]
We had some good entertinment one morning watching them attempt to launch this boat while we fished down the beach. The tractor was buried and was trying to use its front loader to push and pull itself out of its ruts. Eventually enough large waves came in and the offshore boat was able to pull itself off the trailer under power.

[Baja Beach Fly Fishing Brandon Squyres Hooked up]
The last day, in typical Brandon fashion, he nailed his fish of the trip

[Baja Beach Fly Fishing]
The bait had moved in and the Gallo and Torro were visibly cruising the shoreline, providing the sight fishing we’d been waiting for all week.

[Baja Beach Fly Fishing Brandon Squyres Jack Crevalle]
Another big Jack!

[Baja Beach Fly Fishing]
We carefully boga’d him at 15 pounds! What a way to end the trip!

Until next time…
